INTEREST IN KAURI GUM INDUSTRY
In a letter to Mr. Mark Hoggard of Waiharara, in regard to the Government’s interest in the Kauri Gum Industry, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Scientific and Industrial Research, says : “The survey of the gum, lands of North Auckland is being undertaken, at the present time in order to obtain some idea of the amount ofgum actually available in North Auckland, which is a very essential step in the planning of the future of the Industry. At the moment it is not possible to obtain reliable estimates of the amount available. As you are probably aware, a new method of refining ihe kauri gum has been patented in the Dominion Laboratory, and it is essential to have the above estimates in order to consider the possibility of this new process becoming a commercial success.”
