Bowling Trophy for Four Northern Counties
Largely through the efforts of Mr. D. Penney of Kawakawa, Messrs. Dewar and Sons, through their representative Mr. N. J. Cornage have presented a trophy for competition among the Bowling Clubs of the four Northern Counties, and this is now on view at the Kaitaia Hotel. The trophy, a pewter tankard, is a very fine piece of work. Previously, similar trophies have been presented to bowling centres further south. The Kaitaia Bowling Club has drawn up rules for the competition for the trophy, and these will be submitted to the other clubs concerned. It is suggested that it be a full-rink competition, and that the competition be held on the greens of the various clubs in seccession, annually. The trophy cannot be won outright. The Club on whose greens the competition is held is to provide engraved miniature cup for the members of the winning team, and also an engraved shield for the base of the trophy. Any club that shall fail for two successive years to enter a team in the competition, shall forfeit its priority for the home greens for the competition and shall not have an opportunity of controlling the competition- until all the other clubs have had their turn.
The first thing a young city typist did on hearing that she had been left a five-figure legacy was to have a permanent wave. The money went to her head. * * * Hi It is said that Finland’s payment of her war debts has resulted in increasing American tourist travel by 50 percent. American travellers naturally want to see one of the wonders of the world. • * * « “Strong representations were made for the abolition as soon as possible of sales tax, which has proved so burdensome and irksome and costly in working to the trading community,” states the annual report of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. “The tax was originally imposed as an emergency measure, but the original estimate of an annual yield of £1,600,000 has been greatly exceeded, and with steadily reviving Government revenues it is hoped that abolition will have early attention from the Government, and the heavy impost on living costs removed.”
