Boxing Tournament at Kaitaia

On Wednesday evening a boiing tournament was staged in the Princess Theatre by the committee supporting Mrs. Kelly’s candidature in conjunction wit!) the Theatre management. A good ring bad been erected against the stage and all facilities arranged so that patrons could see the bouts in comfort. After the bouts, the Baer-Carnera fight for the World's Championship, was screened.

The referee for the bouts was Mr. E. Moriette, and the announcer Mr. T, H. Kenny. The following were the bouts staged:—

T. Sturmfels 9.4 defeated T. Maria 9.4. This bout was very willing, both boys mixing it. Sturmfels has improved' considerably since his first appearance in the ring, and he is developing both„ a good right and left. Maurice Gallagher 10 drew with A. Taaffe 10.1. Taaffe came out with come pretty footwork and had Gallagher running around the ring in the first round, which on points easily went to Taaffe. At the finish of the second round Taaffe was winded and waiting for the gong but he revived a bit in the third round. Taaffe had the experience over his opponent but not the condition. T. Yates 11,4 drew with D. Noble 11.10. This was a lively bout, Noble forcing the fighting, but the points were slightly in Yates’ favour. J. Leathwick 11 defeated S. Gibbs 11.

This bout interested the spectators. The first round consisted of jather long range but there were some lively exchanges in the second, and in the third Leathwick was forcing the fighting and Gibbs was going for the clinches.

C. Hutley 11 defeated H. Yates 11.4 by a technical k.o. at the end of the second round. Hutley outboxed his opponent who finished up pretty groggy. Max Gallagher 8.10 defeated A. Watts 9.9, Gallagher, although the lighter man, had the reach of his opponent and used a good straight left to advantage. Watts was a game fighter. G.Frear 13.8 defeated Whiskers Clarke 13.4.

This was the best fight of the evening and the best these two men have ever fought. In the first rou d Clarke pushed the fighting, going chiefly for the body of his taller opponent. Clarke rushed from the gong in the second round, trying for a k.o. but Frear’s long reach held him ofl. A third round of hard fighting finished a good bout with points in Frear’s favour.
