Accident A farm hand, W. Hughes, suffered a painful accident last week. While working a circular saw, the bench became stuck, and in attempting to free it, his hand became caught in the saw, and almost severed the first finger of his left hand. The injury was sufficiently severe to necessitate the immediate amputation of the linger. He is progressing favourably. Guild Afternoon A social afternoon held under the auspices of the Methodist and Anglican Ladies’ Guilds was held in the Kaeo library on Thursday. About 40 packets for the surprise packet stall were received. The winners of competitions were Mesdames J. W. Hayes, F. N. Silk, R. Jamieson. Cricket Meeting The annual meeting of the Kaeo Cricket Club was held in Pye’s hall on Thursday. There was a fair number present, and the meeting was presided over by Mr. P. D. Lane. The balance sheet was read and adopted. A credit balance of £2 1/8 was shown. The officers for the year were elected as follows : Patron Mr. H. K. Leslie ; President —Mr. S. E. Cooper; Vice-Presidents —Messrs. W. H. Moselen, A. W. Kenney and D. K. Dunbar; Secretary—Mr. V. Whitehead ; Committee—Messrs. V. H. Dane, A. McKeown, D. Whitehead, P. D. Lane and V. Whitehead. It was announced that the same paddock would be available this year. Purchase of new gear was left to the discretion of the committee. At a committee meeting held after the general meeting, it was decided that the club invite the Kaeo Tennis Club to co-operate in a dance to be held in Pye’s hall on New Year’s Eve. One-fifth of the proceeds shall go towards the annual picnic fund. Tennis Opening In spite of the heavy showers which fell during the morning, the afternoon was brilliantly fine, and the Kaeo Tennis Club enjoyed a successful opening day on Saturday. About 40 players took part in the tournament, and numbers of spectators were also present. It was largely owing to the energetic work done by some of the men during the week that the opening was the success it was, and the courts were in excellent order. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies’ committee. Mrs. J. Kenney served the first official ball of the season.
