Cricket

Notes on Various Matches

During the holidays cricket revived considerably, particularly in Victoria Valley, where three interesting matches were played, the results in all games being awaited keenly.

The first was on Saturday December 30th, when a team of tennis players (all good cricketers) were defeated by their willow wielding mates to the tune of 124 to 61.

For the winners E. White top scored with 31, while P. Panther 21, S. Edwards 13, and H. Panther 16, batted well, and in the bowling department Ashley Thompson —a very promising colt— was the most successful, taking 5 wickets at little cost.

Among the tennisites W. Switzer played well for 22, and S. Switzer, A. Rogers and P. Thompson divided bowling honours.

On Tuesday, January 2, an Okaihau eleven played Victoria Valley, when in an enjoyable game the visitors scored 55 to Valley’s 75.

Batting first, the home team’s best scorers were S. Edwards 13, P. Panther 16, and B. Trigg 10. Godfrey 5 for 31 and Ludbrook took most of the wickets. For the visitors Blundell 19, and Ilolt 14, made most runs against good bowling the best figures being obtained by Ashley Thompson, 3 for 17, and F. Panther, 3 for 4.

On Saturday the 6th, the great rivals Mangonui and Valley met on the latter’s wicket, and after a hard fought game victory went to the visitors by the narrow margin of 3 runs.

Mangonui won the toss and batted, compiling &2, W. Wrathall 17, J. Robb 30, T. dill 18 and McCarthy 17. Bowling- -W. Thompson 4 for 33, P. Panther 2 for 13, F. Panther 1 for 12 and W. Dawson 2 for 14. For the home side W. Dawson 25, F. Panther 18 and B. Trigg 11 not out, made most of the runs. Mahon L for 17 and the veteran R. T. Wrathall 4 for 17 proved the undoing of the Valley-ites.

It seems now that cricket in this county is definitely on the up-grade.
