Waiharara School Concert and Prize Giving

The day for the “Break-up” ceremony of the Waiharara School, was beautifully fine, and though the homes in the district are scattered, the attendance might have been greater. The celebration followed, the form initiated last year. First was a varied and attractive concert programme, comprising over forty items; the ladies then served refreshments to all present, the children especially, enjoying this part of the programme, and the distribution of nuts which took place later. The head teacher, Mr. R. L. McNabb, and the assistant, Mr. G. C. Wood, 'then presented the prizes as'follows:— Mary Morning—School Cleaning. Mary Stanisich—Best Home Garden. The first four mentioned had full attendance. The chairman of the School Committee, Mr. E. Shine, was the next speaker. He complimented the pupils upon the standard of their concert programme, and referred in eulogistic terms to the work of the teachers as exemplified in the high standard of work attained in the school. The Agricultural Experimental Area movement was deserving of special commendation, and the hearty support of the community. A good start had been made in this worthy venture. Highly creditable handwork of a practical nature was being done. He appealed to the parents to send their children punctually and regularly. The school merited the fullest co-operation of the community. Replying for Mr. Wood and himself, Mr. McNabb thanked those present for their interest, and the Committee for its assistance. Touching on some aspects of the past work, he stated that nearly 100% of certificates had been gained in the Swimming and Life-Saving classes of the Senior Room, and quite a number in the Junior Room. The honour of gaining second place in' the North Auckland Division of the Davies Cup Shield competition had been won by their school, and a special Merit Certificate had been gained. He again stressed the necessity for full and active co-operation. Anyone working against the school's interests was doing harm to the child, and therefore to himself and the district. The teachers were there to assist, not merely in the school, but in any matters pertaining to the welfare of the community. In conclusion he wished all the children and parents a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year and that the two sick girls who were absent would make a speedy recovery.
