Women’s Institute

WAINUI-AHIPARA

There wae a good attendance of members at this month’s meeting of the Wai-nui-Ahipara Women’s Institute. A competition for the best Madeira cake was won by Mrs. Stuart Masters with Mrs. A. Morice second. The winner of the “best vase of flowers” competition was Miss Hazel Masters. A “Bring to Buy” stall held in aid of the local tennis club was most successful. During the afternoon two further competitions were won by Mrs. I. J. Berghan and Miss Z. Berghan. The roll call was “Sing, Sas\ Whistle or Pay” and caused much amusement. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. G. Horsford and Miss H. Masters.

FAIRBURN’S The December meeting of the Fairborn Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday, Mrs. Luptou presiding over a good attendance of members and friends. Ore new member was enrolled. Instead of the usual meeting in Janary, it was decided to have a picnic for the children at Taipa' The secretary was instructed to write a letter of sympathy to Mrs. Marshall Atkinson who is ill in the Mangonui Hospital. The Roll Call was “What I would like to see on the programme” and brought forth many helpful suggestions for future meetings. A very interesting talk was given by Mrs. Chapman on fruit and flowers in the South Island. Demonstrations which were very much appreciated were given' by Miss Thomas on icing a cake and by Mrs. Me Kinnon on making a wool embroidery cushion.

The competitions for the month were for a cushion made from scraps, a home made handkerchief and a bowl of flowers.

PAP^RORE The December meeting of the Paparor.e Women’s Institute was held on Friday, flie 15th December, when there was a good attendance of members. Tlie following were judged the best exhibits in the--competitions;— Best Brown-Bread-AMrs.. Marsden 1 Mrs. D. David 2 : Mrs. 8. Hunter J. Hat made from grasses etc, gathered locally—Mrs. 8. Hunter L; Mrs'. Marsden 2; Mrs. Tepania 3. After the singing of tlie Institute song Misses Rivers, Brown and Walters gave an exhibition of tlie haka being prepared for the welcome of tlie Governor General at Waitangi early in 1934. The local headmaster, Mr. R. 11. Shutt addressed the members on the value of co-operation between the Institute and the school and thanked members for their assistance during the past year. One.new member, Mrs. J. Erceg, was enrolled. The competitions for the next meeting lGtb February, are as follows:—4 best small cakes,' 1 patchwork quilt, 1 milk cover. 1 After an exchange of the Season’s Compliments between the. School Staff and the members of the Institute the meeting terminated.
