THE COST OF ROAD TRAFFIC
In reply to a questionaire issued to County Councils by the Prime Minister during the sitting of the Parliamentary Economy Committee, the Otamatea County Council stated : “The Council wish to emphasise the economic waste that is taking place as a result of the sipringing up this year of fast passenger services which traverse the heart of this County to and from Whangarei and Auckland and Dargaville and Auckland in direct opposition to the railway, and my Council urge that strong measures be taken to regulate this traffic both as to fares and the number of services. No less than eight services run daily from Whangarei and northwards and two from Dargaville—very often without a passenger.
“As speed is an essential factor in making these services attractive, the County roads, which, owing to the weakness of foundations and their narrowness are classified as 21 ton roads, are unable to stand up to the pounding which results from fast moving vehicles, in addition to the ordinary local traffic.”
