How to Balance the Budget

Mr. A. P. Blundell hatches out a scheme to place the finances of the Dominion on a square basis. He writes : Up to the time of writing the Cabinet of the National Government has never consulted me over the matter; in fact they never have at all. But I am not going to be puerile and childish over the matter ; I look upon the benefit I can be to my country and have worked this scheme out to show a small balance. It rests entirely with Messrs. Coates and Forbes Whether they will benefit by adopting my scheme or otherwise. Estimated amount required £7,000,000. I would sell the three winter months of Allen Bell’s Winterless North climate to the French colonies of equatorial Africa, which would give then rain enough to flood the Sahara desert lft. 6in. deep. Approximate value say, £2,000,000. I would have all Mr. Ground’s speeches and arguments in the benefits of all countries interested in Dairy Control Board made up in book form and sold to all competitors to the N.Z. butter industry. Estimated value say, £2,000,000. I would improve on Sidey time by putting the clock on a year ahead, so we would always be in next year, and never have any current year to bother us. Estimated value, £50,000. I .would sell all the broken metal on the Horeke-Taheke road that won’t go through a 9inch ring to any County wanting spauls. Estimated value £5,000. I would lease to the London County Council or any other County Councils abroad all surplus County Managers in N.Z. to teach them County economy. Estimated value, £1,000,000. I would stop all importation of petrol and build distilleries in N.Z. sufficient to make enough alcohol for all motor power required and produce it as cheap as imported petrol. Estimated value, £1,555,000. Cost of posting this letter, 2d. Ideas Conceived 6/8. A total of £7,000,000 6/10, which, as the estimated amount required is £7,000,000, leaves a balance of 6/10.
