A UNITED CHURCH SERVICE

While other places have been discussing the question of Church union, Kaitaia has been giving a practical example of it by holding united church services every two months for the last year and a half. These gatherings have been very successful, and in spite of a cold, wet, blustery, wintery Sunday night there was a large congregation in the A. and P. hall. The Methodist minister led the service, the Anglican clergyman the prayers, and the Presbyterian preached the sermon : “Is Christianity a Dead Letter?” Mr. Martin was of opinion that in some respects it was, if Christianity was confounded with the Churches, whose theology, organisation and practice were clogged with much dead and dying matter. But if they accepted Christianity as the teaching of Christ and the following of Christ, then Christianity was not and never would be a dead letter. Christ satisfied the spiritual hunger of mankind as nothing else could, and until human nature radically altered, the need for Him would always remain. The hearty singing was led by an orchestra and piano and a solo was sung by Mr. Collins.
