SATURDAY'S FOOTBALL.

SENIORS AT DARGAVILLE. HARIIING SHIELD MATCH. MANGONUI V NORTHERN W AIROA. This match took place at Dargaville on Saturday last, the following team representing Mangonui: C. Masters, R. Smith, W. Thompson, H. Yates, F. Evans, J. Souter, W. Evans, W. Yendeli, R. White, M. Richards, M. Yates, K. Stewart, W. Cooper, N. Wilkinson, F. Wallace. The game was played at Rugby park, the weather being fine but the ground a trifle soggy, Plav commenced at 2,30 p.m. Mangonui (black) kicked off with the wind. A loose scrum ensued, Mangonui healing and W. Evans finding the line at 25. Mangonui forwards pressed and the ball was kicked out near the corner flag. Wairoa (black and yellow) cleared with a good kick, their forwards carrying play to the black 25 but a scrum was ordered. The blacks were awarded a ‘free’ for a scrum infringement and play centred in the yellow’s 25. The black forwards were playing a good game and from a melee near the yellow line the ball came out to W. Evans to Souter to F. Evans to Smith who went over in a handy position. Smith’s pass however, was taken off-side and a free kick awrded to the yellows. Play again centred in the yellow’s 25, when Wilkinson picked up in the loose and made a determined run. He dived for the line but fell short. Half time came soon after, there being no score, On resumption Mangonui forwards again took a hand and after some hard play a scrum was ordered near the yellow’s line. Ross White kicked through and following up fast beat the opposition to score in the corner. The kick failed.

Mangonui 3, Wairoa 0. Spurred into action by this reverse Wairoa forwards, with Wells at their head, carried play to the black’s line but the defence was sound and Souter cleared. A scrum followed, the ball going out to Hardgraves at 2nd % who cut through nicely and showed pace, but C. Masters was equal to the occasion.

The blacks again attacked. From a loose scrum W. Evans obtained possession and after a short passing bout Thompson was cornered. He essayed a quick pot, landing a beautiful goal.

Mangonui 7, Wairoa 0. Time was getting on but the black forwards were playing better than ever. From a line out they obtained possession and after a fine bout of in and out passing, Yendeli scored near the posts. The kick failed. Mangonui 10, Wairoa 0. The game ended soon after with the blacks attacking. Mr. Pay Stevenson was referee.
