ASTRONOMICAL ASSOCIATION.

MEETING SUPPORTS FORMATION FURTHER MEETING CALLED. The formation of a local astronomical association to further the interests of astronomy in the town and district was enthusiastically supported at a meeting held in the Public Library on the evening of Tuesday, November 26. Mr. F. Matthews was in the chair and about a dozen intending members of the association attended.

In an explanation of the objects of forming the association, Mr. C. Michie referred to the valuable assistance which interested observers could give to astronomers, even without instruments. The association could meet, say monthly and discuss papers from astronomical societies and perhaps papers by members themselves. He had a telescope, the use of which he offered to the association when suitable housing could be found for it, and he also offered to give illustrated lantern lectures on astronomy. Mr. Foster, Mr. Michie stated ) had offered the use of his rooms free of charge for the holding of meetings.

On the motion of Mr. Berridge> seconded by Mr. Wigley, it was unanimously decided to form an astronomical association to further the interests of astronomy, a membership fee of 5s a year being suggested. All present immediately enrolled as members.

It was decided to hold a further meeting rn a fortnight’s time to consider the adoption of rules and the election of officers. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Michie for his action in fostering the formation of the association.

At the conclusion of the meeting Mr. Michie delivered a highly interesting address on the Tungusk meteorite, which fell in Central Siberia in 1908 denuding a large tract of country. The dis-i cussion ended with a general talk on meteorites.
