The thief, frightened nearly out of his wits, hounded down the few remaining flights as fast as his legs would carry him cut into the street, followed by the concierge. His flight, however, was short, for by the time his breathless pursuer had covered a hundred yards or so the thief was safely in the clutches of a policeman.
