Sailor Boy Chris

Letter From Overseas

4 The following is a letter from Mr Chris Dunn from River Plate, Argentine, to Mrs Dunn, senr., of Kaitaia. Dear Gran, ITorget whether I wrote to you from Santos, out last port in Brazil, but if I did it’s high time I wrote again. We have been in the river about a fortnight and had quite a good time. We had a day and a night in Buenos Aires and then up here, about twentyfour hours’ run up the river. For the fortnight we were in Santos it rained pretty well incessantly and the mosquitoes and flies nearly drove us crazy, so we had a rather thin time there. We were lucky in getting the Easter holidays in here. Good Fridav we all went to the English mission to a sacred concert which was very nice. We will be leaving I think, about Wednesday, for Teneriffe (Canairies) for orders, so I don’t know when we will reach England again. When we do 1 am going to see Aunt Ellen for a tew days and then to London to try again for a ship home. I have not had a letter for ages and although I have written and written to Rotterdam have had no reply. However I hope'' in about three months’ time to be following this one myself so there won’t be many more going astray. The climate here is very much like that of New Zealand at this time of year though a trifle hotter and they have periodical, what they call, pompieros, very severe wind and rain squalls lasting about half an hour. I seem unable to concentrate on writing to-night. The drab firemen are jabbering next door like monkeys and everyone over our side is talking at once so 1 hope you’ll excuse this. I suppose you have had the Agricultural show, past and done with. I was hoping to be home for that this year but never mind I’ll be there before the next one. I plaved for this ship against another one in a football match here yesterday. That is the first one I have had since the last one in Kaitaia about four years ago. We lost by quite a lot but still it was enjoyable. Well Gran, I am ashamed to send you this attempt at a letter but am working under extremely adverse conditions as I mentioned so will close down for to-night. With best love I remain Your loving grandson Chris.
