Problems Of Empire
Solutions Wanted [ Much time is wasted each year by the legislation of this country on useless debates such as the Address in Reply. When the time of the politicians is spent in this manner is it any wonder that people are seized with unrest and discontent knowing that we have problems to tace that require careful forethought and consideration before a solution can be arrived at. Among the problems requiring immediate solution we will enumerate those we think should be dealt with by our legislators. The settlement of our idle land is a problem that will tend to solve others as soon as a resolution is arrived at. Governments come and go but their attempts at land settlement can be considered a failure from a national point of view. We have the problem of unemployment, one of the greatest curses of our civilisation to-day, bringing poverty and distress to the lower classes and intensifying the social problem of making a solution more difficult. The distribution of the population in the thickly populated portions of the empire to the open spaces of our colonies is a problem that will have to be grappled within the near future. The problem of filling the breach between capital and labour and bringing about a reconciliation between employer and employee. We have the racial problem of East v West. Prohibition and the taxation problem, are all matters that require the help of considerate governments in order to arrive at a satisfactory solution.
