Mrs. T. Eckford

Colonist of Fifty Y cars

Mrs Ecklord, widow of the late Captain Eckford well-known in shipping circles in Wellington and Marlborough, passed away i-n the Mangonui Hospital on Sunday. Deceased had reached tie age of eighty years and up till a fortnight prior to her death she had enjoyed comparatively good health. She came north with her daughter Mrs A M Shugar three weeks ago intending to spend some time here. Ten days ago she was taken ill and on medical advice being sought she was ordered into the Mangonui Hospital. After admission she appeared to improve but becoming worse she was operated upon for hernia. She stood the operation well but her age and failing strength made her prospects of recovery slight. She lingered for a few days after the operation and despite ali the care and attention received from Dr Cameron, the matron and nursing staff she passed peacefully away as stated, Deceas»d was born in Bombay in 1847 her parents being natives of N irihamoton. She arrived i • New Zealand in 1873 and later was mairied to Captain Eckford. The early years of their married life were spent in Wellington but the growth of the shipping business in which Captain Eckford was engaged, necessitated their removal to Blenheim from which centre they carried 3 large portion of produce to the Wellington markets. Captain Eckford died suddenly during the war and. the, business has subsequently' been carried on by the sons. The late Mrs Eckford was a popular figure both in Marlborough a id Wellington. She leaves three sons and three daughters to mourn their loss as follows :—Messrs C A Eckford, S Eckford, R E Eckford and Mrs Shugar, Mrs H Lucas and Mrs W Mutton.

The body has been transported to Blenheim where the burial will take place on Thursday.
