Heinstan.cd particularly two old kauri stumps of trees at Titirangi that had been cut down over6o years ago. These relics showed signs of life and investigations revealed the strange fact that a bit of the root in each tree had grown into the root of a neighbouring young kauri, and the old stumps were t.ius drawing life lrom their younger companion. The same sort of thing had been observed at any other parts ot the Waitakere country. Six otner conifers were known to resort to the same expedient to prolong life.
