TELEPHONE SERVICE.
SUGGESTED CENTRAL EXCHANGE. A proposal to link up Awanui telephone subscribers with the Kaitaia Exchange, thereby giving them the benefit of the 6 a.m. to midnight service has been before the public for some time, the matter having been raised by the Kaitaia Chamber of Commerce. Some indignation has been ex-
pressed by Awanui residents at the action of the Chamber in seeking to have Awanui subscriber connected direct with a central exchange at Kaitaia, fearing that it would ultimately mean a reduction in the grade of the Awanui Post Office. Others again contend that the cost of connecting up with Kaitaia exchange would be too great. With the idea of finding out what the approximate cost would be to subscribers, an “Age” reporter interviewed Mr. H. A. Munn, postmaster at Kaitaia. Mr. Munn Stated that personally he had no interest in the matter, but as a departmental officer out to give the Awanui public the advantages of an almost continuous service, without bureau fees, he would say that, if judiciously grouped, the cost of connection with Kaitaia would not be high. Mr. Munn gave examples of the cost of the different sized group (suggested) as follows: —
