That the Commonwealth Gov--1 rnment should be compelled to take steps to dispose of the Commonwealth line of steamships, is a grim commentary on the aims of extreme unionists. It might have been thought that they would have aimed at making the venture a success, if only to provide an answer to critics of socialistic enterprise. The line was founded with the goodwill of Australians, who saw in it a protection against the demands of the Shipping Combine. But the Seamans and kindred unions never gave it a chance. Their attempts at job control crippled the efforts of the managemnnt and have now driven the Government to endeavour to dispose of the steamers. The country has lost some £12,000,000 on the venture, which is a lot of money to prove that the nationalised ventures will not work out according to theory. The seamen and other ship workers have shown themselves absolutely selfish, and indifferent to the interests of other workers all through. Now they have killed the goose, Mr. Walsh and other imported agitators should be satisfied.
