HELPING TO WIN THE WAR

The following letter received by the Secretary of the Kaitaia Chamber of Commerce from the Secretary of the Gum Diggers Union, Waihopo—and which displays on either failure to grasp the necessities oi the Empire in the pi'esent crisis will no doubt be read with interest. The clipping referred to is a report of the Chambers proposals published in the Auckland “Star”:—

Gentlemen,—ln reference to the above clipping we beg to pi'otest against such a sweeping set of pi'opositions formulated by you for the express purpose of conti'olling the Kaui'i Gum Industry. By the tci m Aliens, do you include Naturalised Britishers? If so we beg to inform you that we have some of this class of men in our Society and that wc intend to protect them to the best of our advantage. We therefore ask you when giving this matter your final consideration to please exempt all our members. Whether Naturalised or not. Re your recommendation “to the Efficiency Boai’d, that the Gum Industry be classed as partially essential industry.” We would point out to you that your organisation was not brought into existence for the purpose of controlling the Kauri Gum Industry, and we as an organisation in the trade resent any interference on your part with our affairs. Look after your own business and you will find that you have plenty to do, and take notice that we intend to piotest every inch of ground. E. McDOUGALL, Sec., A. G. D. Union, \\ aihopo.
