Waipapakauri v. Kaitaia.

Hirst Strikes Form,

(From our \\ aipapakaun (joiTesponaent.) Waipapakauri and Kaitaia tried conclusions on tho former’s ground on Saturday, 23rd January. Kaitaia batted first and put on the useful total of 121. D. White’s faultless innings of 43 not out contributed largely to the score. George Cosson, who made 37, was considerably assisted by bad fielding on the part of the home players but “Mel” Masters batted well for the 16 runs which he notched. In Waipapakauri’s first innings Hirst got going and was unfortunate in being run out when he was well set. His display was one of the best exhibitions of cricket seen at Waipapakauri this season, all round the wicket he showed good form and his timing was perfect. The 36 runs which Hirst scored were gained by sterling cricket. T. Houston played a useful innings for 20, but of the others only E. White stayed any length of time at the wickets and the tenth man was out at 94. In their second innings Kaitaia did not seem quite so “ at home ” with the bowling. C. Dunn scored 21 in creditable manner, D. White secured 13, G. Cosson 11 and G. Puckey 10, but the other members of the team did little to support these and the effort realised but 73. With 101 runs to win and eighty-five minutes to play the Scallywags had a difficult task before them. But the Kaitaia captain made matters worse, for he seemed to resort to tactics which all the true sports in the visiting team would rather have had nothing to do with. He appeared to deliberately waste time. It took twenty minutes before play was resumed after the close of the Kaitaia second innings and White and Goodwin were kept waiting at the wickets for fully ten minutes, if not more. But when play did start these two made no mistakes and treated the spectators to somo lively hitting, putting on forty runs in eighteen minutes. White lost his wicket at 41 and Hirst joined Goodwin to commence punishing the bowling straight away. At 58 Goodwin drove one hard back to D. White. E. Noble and 11. Christensen were both quickly dismissed but when T. McKeown partnered Hirst a good stand was made and this pair carried the score to 92 before Hirst fell a victim to a ball from Cosson, the retiring batsman having compiled 31 with pretty cricket. T. Houston joined McKeown and the former made the winning hit, a fine four. Both players and spectators were intensely excited over ,the game and as Waipapakauri’s dashing innings progressed the interest became very keen till at the finish all were at fever heat. A good match splendidly won against time and proof that the Waipapakauri Scallywags can play an uphill game. The full scores read : Kaitaia.—First Innings. M. Masters, c and b Hirst .. .. 16 C.
