“I insist on an answer to my question," exclaimed the K.C. “I want to know everything that passed between you and Mr. Smart on the occasion to which you refer." “I’ve told you everything of any consequence," replied the reluctant witness.
“You have told me that you said to him : ‘Smart, this case is bound to go to the courts some day.’ Now I want to know what he said in reply." 6 “I’d rather not say." , , “I insist !"
“All right, if you insist upon it, but don’t blame me. He said : ‘Dodd, there isn’t anything in this business that I’m ashamed of, an’ if any stoopin’, little hee-hawin’, four-by-six, gimlet-eyed lawyer, with four ounces of brhins and sixteen pounds of jaw, ever wants to know what I’ve been talking to you about you can tell him the whole story.’ That’s what he said, an’ I hope you like it.-’
