Fairburn.

(From our own Correspondent.) Road work has now been commenced in this district. A start is bging made in some formation at Whitehead’s corner, where it is proposed to put a few chains of metal. It is a very bad place in winter and spring and will be a great convenience to the creamery suppliers when metalled. Mr. Shackelton, of Fern Flat, is in charge of the work. Mr. T. Coulter is making great improvements to his Fairburn property. Among other useful items are 100 chains of subdivisional fencing and a swing gate on Duncan’s road. Many of the settlers here are suffering from an epidemic of boils. Arms, wrists and face are generally the favoured spots, but some are unfortunate enough to have them m most inconvenient ‘places. There has been quite a run'“©n||atkmt blood purifiers, but in the writers™opinion the people do not get half enough vegetables, and in this connection it may be stated that there'is it really good opening here for anyone to start a small vegetable farm. A good quantity could be sold in the settlement and the surplus could easily be disposed of at the various gumfields. The Fairburn picnic was held in Mr. R.

May’s paddock and was an enjoyable affair. The attendance was not so large as usual, owing to the absence of many of our Valley friends. Some amusement was caused by the absence of cups at dinner time, but this little slip was remedied by Mr. A. Wells in record time. A capital spread was ‘provided by the ladies, and after dinner the usual games and races were in full swing. The committee worked hard to make everyone comfortable and their efforts were crowned with success. After the picnic was over the welcome rain began to fall in a steady shower, so the ball arranged for the evening attracted only a few enthusiasts, whose ardour nothing could damp.
