Bubning op the St. Lewis. — The French screw steamer St. Lewis arrived here on the night of the 14th current, from Calcutta the 27th ultimo. On the previous morning she was found to be on fire, and on her arrival every assistance was rendered to her by the Master Attendant and H.M.S. Niger. It was proposed that she should be scuttled, but her commander was averse to this and tried to keep the fire under by closing up all the hatches and cutting holes in the deck, through which water was poured us faßt as possible. .In the course of the forenoon she was taken over to tho beach at Tanjong Kattong, and hi the afternoon the fire seemed to have been pretty well got under, as very little smoke came out. About seven o'clock in the evening, however, the fire burst up through the hatches, and in a very short time the whole vessel was enveloped in flumes. An attempt was then made to scuttle her, but it was only partially successful, as she was aground. She continued to burn with great violence for several hours, tho whole harbour being lit up, and tho flames being visible at many miles, distance from the town. On the morning of the 16th she was burnt to the water's edge, and by the afternoon nothing remained but a mere wreck, which continued burning up to the time of our going to press. — Singapore Free Press,
