PORT NICHOLSON.

We have received Gazettes, to the 10th, but can only find room for the following :—

Food. — It is very important to know the probable quantity of wheat that will be grown for this' market next year, and we should feel obliged if parties would provide us with a tolerably accurate account of the land under wheat cultivation. We have heard it stated that we may expect 200 tons of wheat from New Plymouth, 200 tons from the east coast, 400 from the Hutt, 150 from the Porirua, and 50 from Karori; together, 1,000 tons of wheat. If this statement approaches the truth at all, even with the great disadvantages under which we are labouring, arising out of the state of the land question, in this district, we shall produce more wheat than will be needed for our local consumption — enough indeed to supply the fisheries and coast stations as wall as our local consumption.

Wairarapa. — The Industry schooner was embayed in Palliser Bay during the recent southerly wind. In trying to work out she lost her sails, and, after suffering other damages, she ran for the old whaling station, where she rode out the gale with perfect safety. She did this, too, with only a small anchor and thirty fathoms of cable. It has long been asserted by the natives that the spot in question afforded shelter for a few small vessels, but it was not believed. The Industry has now confirmed the accuracy of the state.ment, unless a wind from the southwest should affect the anchorage, an unusual direction for the wind about this part of New Zealand.
