PATRIOTIC FUNDS

TAKAKA COMMITTEE ANNUAL MEETING There was only an average attendance at the annual meeting of the Takaka Patriotic Controlling Commute. Mr N. L. Bensemann presided and read the annual report. Mr J. Vaughan congratulated the chairman and committee on the excellent report. The balance sheet of the Nelson Provincial Patriotic Council, which showed a credit of some £BO,OOO. was read and discussed and favourably commented on.

Mr J. Vaughan was the only addition to the committee, which was re-elected as follows: Chairman, Mr N. L. Bensemann; hon. secretary, Mr J. Bradley; hon. treasurer, Mr G. E. Boyes; committee, Mesdames Oliver Page, A. Rose, J. Small, Messrs N. Walker, A. Rose, E. Polglase, C. Strickland and J. Vaughan. Mr Bensemann, returning thanks for his re-election as chairman, stressed the fact that the Patriotic Committees had still a most important task to perform, in guarding the interests and welfare of all returned servicemen and women and their dependants. He said that the calls on patriotic funds which were few at present would increase as the years went by. There was no further need to raise funds, however, and no annual appeal would be made. Mr Vaughan thanked the committee on behalf of the R.S.A. for consideration and help given to all cases sponsored by the association. The report stated, inter alia: “The committee again fixed as its quota £ 1000 for the direct appeal, and, as in the past, the collectors again did a wonderful job, and our sincere thanks are offered to all the collectors for their fine effort. “The W.N.R. has again given this committee every assistance, particularly in the matter of Takaka’s quota of gift parcels, and we desire to thank them for their work. Takaka’s quota was always filled. “In June the R.N.Z.A.F. Band and concert party visited Takaka, giving a concert and marching display in aid of patriotic funds. This proved a great financial success and the entertainment was greatly enjoyed. “The committee was able to remit to the treasurer £1175 for the -'ear ending 30th September, 1945, thus worthily continuing the good work of the previous years. The grand total subscribed through the committee during the war was £9IBO. Takaka has every reason to be proud of its patriotic contributions and the committee thanks all who helped in this and other years. “Several cases of relief were considered during the year and in each case assistance was granted. “This report woujd not be complete without reference to the victory achieved by our fighting ser-‘ vices. Let us express our gratitude to those who have laid down their lives for us, to those who have returned maimed or sick and to all who sacrificed so much for us, and to remember that although the war is now over we have still a duty to perform in regard to patriotic matters.”
