NELSON REPERTORY THEATRE
FINAL READING OF SEASON At its final meeting for the year the Nelson Repertory Society read A. G. Macdonell’s brilliant comedy “The Fur Coat.” The Marsden Hall Library was filled with an audience that was not slow to appreciate the rapier-like thrusts and subtleties of wit in the dialogue—qualities which have become familiar to readers of Macdonnell’s better-known prose works. “England Their England.” ‘‘Flight from a Lady,” “Autobiography of a Cad.” and “How Like an Angel.” A. G. Macdonell’s untimely death in 1940 was a great loss to contemporary literature. “The Fur Coat” was first produced two years ago. The fur coat in question belonged to an actress, married to a writer, a charming cad who employs a “ghost” to write his books and plays, a confirmevi parasite and persistent philanderer. His wife endures his failings until he pawns her coat to raise money for a dash to Paris with a young lady. At this she revolts, with results that are dramatic and which provide a hilarious final curtain and an unexpected denouement to the story. The reading was arranged by Mrs Murdoch, and the cast consisted of Mrs Campbell. Miss Hood, Messrs Addis, Banks, Beechy, Millar and Simm.
