WELLINGTON PRODUCE PRICES
TOWNSEND AND PAUL’S REPORT (Special to “The Mail”) Townsend and Paul. Ltd., fruit and produce auctioneers, Wellington, report that fruit auctions were again well attended throughout the past week Tomatoes are now coming to hand more freely both from Blenheim and Nelson districts, choice lines being in demand and values remaining steady. Cherries, plums (all varieties), red currants, strawberries and citrus have all been sought, whilst gooseberries have shown a sharp rise. All seasonal flowers have again met with ready sale, whilst most varieties of vegetables have been in demand, green peas, new season marrows, swedes, carrots and parsnips have met with particularly keen enquiry. Poultry yardings have shown a slight increase on those of the last period. Values however, have been maintained for all prime birds, with the exception of ducks, which have been in very heavy supply Quotations are:—Hot-house tomatoes, 1/1 to 2/6 lb (according to quality); gooseberries, lid. 1/- lb; plums (Sharp’s). 27/6, (bronze). 14/- to 21/-, (cherry). 7/6 to 10/6: tree tomatoes. 26/- lo 34 - a half case; cherries. 26 6 to 39/-; red currants. 2/10 lb : all citrus at ceiling; peas, 8d to 1/3 lb.: beetroot, 4/ to 76; lettuce. 1/- to 86; rhubarb. 5/- to .7/6; spinach. 12/- to 15/- a case; cauliflowers. 6/- to 12/6 sacK; broa'-i beans. Id to 2Jd a lb ; mar rows, 1/3 to 1/9 each: kumefas, swedes, carrots, parsnips, pumpkins, at ceiling; hens (heavy), 7/- to 12/-. (light), 4/- to 7/-; roosters. 6/- to 8/-; pullets (best), 8/- to 12/-; (others), 3/6 to 7/-; cockerels. 4/- to 12/- (according to' weight); chicks 1/- to 3/-; geese, 5/to 7/6; turkeys 1/10 to 2/- lb ; L.W. ducks (young). 7/- to 10/6; (old), 4/to ?/-.
