REPORTS

WORKS COMMITTEE The Works Committee reported and recommended as follows: As to the letter from residents of Tmrhi street asking for improvements to the bridge at the intersection of Tipahi street and Tukuka street and for other street works. That the writers be advised that this matter will be considered when the estimates for the next financial year are being framed. As to the letter from Mr G. J. Bax. ter with regard to the disposal of stormwater in the area adjacent to his property in St. Vincent street: That the committee considers that a stormwater drain should be laid in the Victory Square Reserve and recommends that the matter be referred to the Reserves Department. As to the letter from Mr C. H. Broad drawing attention to the condition of the footpath and watertable in Upper Richardson street: That the writer be advised that it is not the policy of the Council to seal or form approaches to private property. (An amendment by Councillor Russell “that the work be carried out when staff is working in the locality” was defeated). As to the letter from Mr N. V. Jones asking that an additional street light be erected in Lower Locking Street: That the committee is of opinion that no street works are required, but that the erection of an additional street light should receive consideration. As to the letter from the Suburban Bus Company Ltd. submitting proposals with regard to the conveniences at the company’s yard in Bridge street: That consideration has been deferred pending further investigations. RESERVES COMMITTEE The Reserves Committee reported and recommended as follows: As to the letter from Mr W. Bell drawing attention to the nuisance caused by stormwater from the New Cemetery: (a) That the Sexton be instructed to keep the existing drain open so as to prevent the water from flowing on to Mr Bell’s property, (b) That the matter of the more complete drainage of the New Cemetery be deferred pending the completion of negotiations with the War Graves Commission concerning the area set aside for the burial of ex-service-men. As to the letter from Messrs Rout and Milner applying on behalf of Mr K. Roper for permission to construct and use a roadway from Milton street along the northern side of the Botanical Reserve: That the writers be that the Council cannot grant Mr Roper any access to his property over the Botanical Reserve which is, in fact, a Domain, but is prepared to give him permission to dig a ditch to prevent the water from flowing under his house and will supply the stones necessary to fill the required sump provided the work is done under the direction and to the satisfaction of the City Engineer. As to the complaint made bv Mr De Cesare regarding the damage caused to his glasshouse by stones from the Grove Street Children’s Playground: (a) That the complainant be advised that the council has taken all reasonable precautions to prevent damage to his property; (b) that the Traffic Inspector be instructed to exercise some supervision over the playground and that Mr De Cesare be informed accordingly. BYLAWS AND TRAFFIC The Bylaws and Traffic Committee made the following decisions in regard to the enforcement of parking regulations in the city: (a) That, the committee is of opinion that the present parking restrictions in the several parts of the city are adequate if strictly enforced and recommends that the Traffic Inspector be instructed that the regulations are to be so enforced. (b) That public notice be given of the council’s intention to require strict observance of the parking regulations. FINANCE COMMITTEE The Finance Committee reported and*, recommended as follows: As to the letter from the trustees of the Nelson School of Music applying for a rebate on the rates payable in respect of the School of Music property: That the trustees be advised that the council has no power to grant a rebate on the rates, but that upon payment thereof the council will make a grant of £ls under the powers given by section 308 of the Municipal Corporations Act and in consideration of the public amenity which the School provides. GAS AND ELECTRICITY The Gas and Electricity Committee reported and recommended as follows: A s to the Council’s policy regard-

ing the servicing of gas appliances: That the council’s policy be that the servicing of gas appliances be provided free of charge, except in cases in which, in the opinion of the City Engineer the defect is due to faulty installation other than by council servants or in an apnliance of faulty manufacture. As to the letter from Mr N. V. Jones asking that a street light be erected in Locking street: That a street light be installed on the first pole up from Wellington street. As to the letter from Mr H. A. Johnston asking that a street light be erected in Riverside: That the writer be advised that a light will be erected as soon as conditions permit, but that the council is of opinion that there are other parts of the city which have a prior claim and which must therefore be considered first. As to the erection of a street light in Franklyn street: That consideration has been deferred pending a further inspection. The reports were adopted.
