STATUS OF DOMESTIC SERVICE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington, Aug. 29. The provision of help in the home both in town and country was just as important a factor in increasing the population as the economic factor, said Mr R. G. Gerard (National, MidCanterbury) in his Budget speech in th e House of Representatives. He had seen the difficulties facing mothers of families, particularly in the country. But the same thing applied in the towns, where women without help were having their health I undermined. “We will have to raise the status of domestic service and teach our girls that one of the finest things they can do is helping in the homes,” added Mr Gerard. “Despite th e attractions of the factories I know many girls get far more pleasure out of assisting mothers in the homes. Mr Clyde Carr (Government, Timaru): You will have to talk to j some of the mistresses. Mr Gerard: I agree. The fault is! not always on the one side. I do not; stand for bad conditions of work. He stressed the need for pushing ; on with electricity reticulation in the more sparsely settled areas.
