PRIME MINISTER’S COMMENT

CASH PURCHASE (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Well'ngton, Aug. 29. The Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) is reported in this week’s issue of the official organ of the Labour Party, when ask££[ to comment on the likely effect upon New Zealand of United States revised lend-lease arrangements, to have said: “That it is not possible at the moment to say what the precise effect will be pending clarification of several important points.” No other statement, in response to inquiries, has been made by Mr Fraser. The Labour journal’s report says that Mr Fraser added: “Clearly contracts will be cancelled and cash purchase substituted for lend-lease. Every member of the British Commonwealth will thus be faced with the huge problem of obtaining dollars. The cancellation of lend-lease in turn involves the termination of reverse lend-lease under which New Zealand has made and is making very large contributions by way of supplies for the United States forces.” .
