“BAD MANNERS”

LEND-LEASE TERMINATION “ACT OF THOUGHTLESS OFFICIALS” NEW YORK NEWSPAPER’S VIEW New York, August 29. The New York “Sun” says: “Bad manners, bad diplomacy, thoughtlessness and ineptitude marked the United States’ impetuous termination of lend-lease. The British assumed that a transitional period would be granted, especially as the statute runs till May and the war is still not formally ended. It can be confidently assumed that there &ill be a change in the Administration’s policy and that Congress will be urged to approve a modified form of lend-lease. It is not only a question of money but a spirit and fraternity in a world which apparently can be so quickly upset by a single-handed act of our own thoughtless officials.”

RALLYING ROUND BRITAIN

COMMONWEALTH AND EMPIRE London, Aug. 29. “In peace as in war the hour of Britain’s difficulties finds the Commonwealth and Empire rallying round her,” says th e “Daily Mail” in an editorial. “It has become an instinctive reaction and its reality has again been proved now that Britain faces a serious financial situation after notification of the ending of lendlease. The Dominions’ response is ample encouragement for us throughout Britain to go forward and face whatever sacrifices may be demanded in order tha twe may retain selfrespect and financial independence.” A “Daily Mail” cartoon depicts Aus-

tralia and New Zealand as a pair of lifesavers running into the water to rescue Britannia, who is shown clinging to a piece of sinking wreckage labelled “lend-lease.”

The Secretary of State, Mr Byrnes, at a .press conference reported a much better Anglo-American understanding on the termination of lend-lease than a few days ago.
