INTEREST OF REGIONAL PLANNING* COUNCIL Speaking at the meeting of the Nelson Regional Planning Council yesterday, Mr J. C. Redward, Investigating Officer of the Organisation for National Development, stated that the organisation had an officer working on a complete study of population and as soon as his report was ready it would be made available to the Nelson Council. In regard to immigration Mr Redward quoted from a British White Paper giving the immigration policies of the United Kingdom an dthe Dominions regarding immigration. The White Paper pointed out that New Zealand required more population but that its immediate problems were (1) Rehabilitation of servicemen and (2) Shortage of housing. The New Zealand Government would welcome any immigrants who did not require financial or other-, assistance. Mr Redward said he referred to those matters because the Nelson Council at its last meeting had resolved to endeavour to obtain from Cabinet some indication of the increase in population which may be expected in the Dominion within the next 25 years as the result of (a), immigration, and (b) natural increase.
