NEW HOUSE OF COMMONS BUILDING

WORK TO BEGIN BEFORE CHRISTMAS London, Aug. 28. Five hundred small loudspeakers, all concealed and one serving each pair of members, will be installed in the new House of Commons, says the “Evening News” political correspondent. Work is beginning on the new House before Christmas and is expected to take U .’ee and a-half years. The House will be air-conditioned. The 8.8. C. is advising the architect on acoustics. The House will seat 437 members and about 500 others. The architect, Mr Adrian Scott, revealed that the general decorations will be more simple and less ecclesiastical than the old House and the windows will be less churchlike in shape. The walls will be of dark oak from Strat-ford-on-Avon, with carving along the horizontal bands. There will be no gilding, colouring or statuary. The seats and carpets will be plain green. It is expected that woods for the members’ rooms will be imported from the Dominions.
