NELSON TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD

TALK ON “HOLIDAYS FOR MOTHERS” ACTIVITIES OF CIRCLES There was a very good attendance at the August meeting of the Nelson Townswomen’s Guild which was held in the Marsden Library, Mrs Muggeridge presiding. The meeting opened with the singing of the National Anthem and the repeating of the Aspiration. Mrs Muggeridge welcomed all members and visitors. The entertainment for the afternoon Was in the hands of the musical circle of the Richmond Women's Division. The following were the items they gave: Mrs Dickinson, vocal solo: Mesdames Max and Lewis, vocal duet; Mrs Dryden, vocal solo. Mrs Vining acted as accompanist. These items were much enjoyed by all. Each artist was given a shoulder spray. Mrs Hockey president of the Richmond Women's Division spoke briefly on “Holidays for mothers.” She said that while she considered the Day Nursery a gi-eat boon to young mothers she thought that a free kindergarten was a necessity. She also suggested a nursery home where mothers could leave their children for a week or two and where girls could be trained in mothercraft. Mrs Hockey with witty remarks and apt quotations kepi her audience not only interested but highly entertained. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Wright assisted by the following ladies—Mesdames. Shent. League. Hurrell West. McLaren. Heather. Simson. Walker. Snodgrass. Stent, jnr. Wickens and Miss McConchie. The musical circle is busy preparing* for an open afternoon. The gardening circle held its monthly meeting recently. The competition for “The best flower in my garden ’ was won by Mrs Walters, with Mesdames Stephens and Andrews second equal. At the monthly meeting of the guild the gardening circle is respon sible for the arrangement of the flowers. This month the stage was very prettily decorated with Iceland poppies and spring flowers. The play reading circle reported one meeting at which each member gave a reading. Mrs West gave a short talk on Characterisation. Members of the handicraft circle are still busy with the usual crafts —crochet work, tatting, knitting, seagrass-work. bag-making etc. In July there were three demonstrations, one on breadwork given by the secretary, another on the making of a novelty belt out of cigarette papers given by Mrs Plum, and one on rug making out of sugar bags, given by Mrs Coltman. At the August meeting a comoetiticfi for the best wall-pocket or hold-all was held. Mrs Plum was first and Mr Cox, second.
