SCHOOLS RUGBY

NELSON CONGRATULATED SUCCESS IN RECENT TOURNAMENT MANAGER’S REPORT “We are very proud of the Nelson primary schools’ Rugby team and I should like tq congratulate them on the way they played their games and on their win in the tournament,” said the president of the Nelson Rugby Union, Mr D. Max. in welcoming Mr. E. H. Muncaster, delegate of the Schools Rugby Sub-Committee and manager of the Nelson team. to last evening’s meeting of the Nelson Rugby Union’s management committee “I feel sure that in the years to come the team will not only have players in the Nelson Seddon Shield side but going on into higher football.” A motion of thanks to the Schools Rugby Sub-Committee was passed and the president also expressed his appreciation of the assistance given the union by those Nelson residents who billeted visiting players. In his report to the union, Mr Muncaster said : “The tournament was very satisfactorily conducted and as you are aware the Nelson team was unbeaten. This I understand is the first time we have won since the tournament was introduced. The team behaved and played splendidly, and of a hard-working set uf forward Scott, McConchie and Morgan i played outstanding games. The backs also played well when opportunity offered and I think Marshall, the Captain. deserves special mention. On behalf of the team and the schools they represent I thank Mr Stan Chapman for so willingly giving his time and service in coaching the team prior to the tournament, and Rev. Father Cook for his valuable assistance and advice, which I am sure was largely responsible for the boys’ success. “The gross takings for the tournament amounted to £9-2-0 Expenses were: —Oranges 14/5. advance to member for bus fares 5/- leaving a balance of £B-2-7. LENGTH OF TOURNAMENT j “At a meeting of delegates and Union officials following the tournament two important amendents were made to the conditions governing the tournament. First, it has been decided to extend the length of the tournament to a full week to remove the necessity for any team to play more than one game a day, and to permit a trial game on Saturday to enable the general public to see the best players in action. Secondly the re-introduction of the Shield as a means of keeping a record of winners of the tournament. “As a representative of the Nelson schools I voted against this second amendment as I am certain it will not meet with the approval of the majority of our schools which are opposed to the principle of competing for cups or shields in any for the organised sports. “Finally I wish to congratulate your secretary, Mr Lock, on his very successful handling of the billeting and arrangements for entertainment.” Mr Muncaster reported that Mr. S. Croucher had offered to donate 30/-'to-wards the cost of photographs of the team for the players and t?:e union decided to make a grant of £2.
