BIRTH IN A TAXI
RESOURCEFUL DRIVER PROMPT ACTION TAKEN Hamilton, July 26. A Hamilton taxi-driver, Mr W. Wilcock, was faced with an unusual predicament this week. He was conveying a Hamilton resident to a maternity hospital when a cry from the back seat caused him to stop the car. He found that the expectant mother had given birth to a child. The mother’s companion* another woman, proved unequal to the occasion, but the taxi-driver did what was necessary to relieve the woman and infant and hurried to the hospital. In reply to his urgent summons, the door was opened by an angry matron, who upbraided him for making such a noise on the door. On the position being explained, the matron and her assistants hurried to the mother and conveyed ’ her indoors. The mother and child are now doing well. The woman’s husband has since called on Mr Wilcock and has thanked him for his presence Of mind and able assistance in the emergency. He also engaged him to convey his wife home, so that she might have an opportunity of thanking him herself.
