“MOST GRATIFYING”

WAR GRATUITIES Wellington, This Day. Commenting on the Government's decision on the payment of war gratuities to members of the armed forces, the Dominion president of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association, Mr B. J. Jacobs, said yesterday: “The announcement by the Acting-Prime Minister, Mr Nash, is most gratifying. There were several remits in connection with this matter to come before the annual N.Z.R.S.A. conference next week, and the amounts, as announced, generally are in conformity with those set out in the remits. Mr Nash has invited the Dominion executive committee of the R.S.A. or a committee from the conference to discuss with him the method of payment and the amounts payable to dependants prior to a final decision being reached by the Government, and this gesture is much appreciated by the association.” Satisfaction that the Government had at last made a decision regarding the payment of a gratuity and that it had agreed on a flat rate was expressed by Mr E. L. Thwaites, Dominion president of the Second N.Z.E.F. Association.
