MENTAL HOSPITAL PROPERTY
PART WANTED BY NELSON COLLEGE
The Nelson College Council of Governors last night decided to maks representations to the Government for Dart of the Nelson Mental Hospital property to be added to the College grounds when the hospital is closed in accordance with a recent announcement by the Government. “The addition of part of this property to the College would provide for two football fields, a site for a hostel and sufficient area for the agricultural side,” state Mr H. V. Sca:*lc. Principal of the College, in his monthly report. “With only four football fields for 670 boys and two afternoons a week after school taken up with military drill, it is not possible to give our boys anything approaching the amount of time for sport that was possible in the days when Nelson College was a school of 200. “One of the buildings could probably be adapted to relieve our housing shortage during the period that we are waiting for a new house to accommodate College House boys. This would enable us to close College House, which was reopened in 1937 for a period estimated at i 8 months that was then considered sufficient for the completion of a new house” Mr H. Atmore, M.P., was asked to make representations on behalf of the Council of Governors to the Ministers of Health and Education. Those present at the meeting were Mr C. R. Fell (chairman), Lady Scot', Mrs E. R. Childs, Messrs L. H. fcull, S. Kenning, D. Horlor, C. Milner, H. Atmore, M.P., C. M. Collins, H. Barltrop and Dr. W. D. S. Johnston. An apology for absence was received from Mr F. W. Hamitlon.
