INCREASE SOUGHT
MILK PRICE FOR 1945-46 DEPUTATION BY PRODUCERS Wellington, June 9. An increase in price for the 1945-46 season was sought by a deputation which waited yesterday on the Minister of Marketing, Mr Roberts, and the Minister of Health, Mr Nordmeyer, after a four-day meeting of the Dominion executive of the Town Milk Producers’ Federation. In reply the Minister of Marketing agreed to give full consideration to the case put forward bf the federation, and he thanked the producers for the obviously thorough manner in which they were tackling the problem of providing a satisfactory milk supply for the people of the Dominion. A suggestion was made to the Minister of Health that, because of the many difficulties to be overcome, it did not ap*pear possible at the moment to draft wholly suitable regulations to be gazetted by way of implementing the provisions of the Milk Act, 1944, as governing supply associations. The federation thought that it would be wise to defer the drafting of those regulations till a later date when they could be completed in the light of fuller knowledge. Except for certain essential provisions necessary to bring the Act into force, the Minister appeared favourable to the suggestions and promised consideration of them. During the four days’ discussion it was also decided to recommend to the Government the adoption of the national price structure to both the North and South Islands, thereby lifting, on a gallonage basis, the South Island producers to the same level of payment as those in the North Island.
