THE YOUNG PEOPLE'S CLUB

rio the Editor] Sir, —In your issue of Bth Jun e appears an anonymous letter (over the nom de plume “British”) seeking further information regarding the Nelson Young People’s Club, with particular reference to Dr. McLean, immediate past-president of the Nelson Branch of the Society for Closer Relations with Russia. Dr. McLean has on one occasion only addressed the club, his subject being “Dreams and Their Interpretation.” Surely such an address could have no political significance. Dr. McLean was on one other occasion one of six members of a ‘Brains Trust’ which answered only questions put to them by the audience. H e on each occasion was a visitor only and has no connection with the club nor has he at any time been a member of the club.

It is strange that “British” has no compunction in using Dr. McLean’s name in the columns of “The Mail” while he seems exceedingly reluctant to quote his own name. He appears to be lacking in one essential British quality, courage, in that he has chosen to attack our club from behind the shelter of a nom de plume.

We take exception to one statement in his letter where he said that we are most anxious to disclaim any connection with the Society for Closer Relations with Russia. We feel impelled to point out that w e did not rush into print with a disclaimer, but answered, with facts, the queries raised in the first instance by “British,” and another anonymous correspondent “Loyal.” We understand that the Society for Closer Relatiqns with Russia is nonpolitical in the same manner as the “British - American Co-operation League.” We mention this fact because at our only film evening to date the bulk of the films shown were loaned by the American Legation in Wellington. As yet has seen fit to condemn the club on that score. We reiterate that our club is nonpolitical and non-sectarian. Our meetings are always open to the public (there will be one on Tuesday night) and we feel that our activities can speak for themselves. We ask only that before again making unfounded accusations the two persons concerned should seek first hand knowledge by attending some of our meetings.—l am, etc.. On behalf of the Nelson Young People’s Club, PATRICIA M. COLFMAN. Secretary. Nelson 11th June.
