A LETTER FROM ALICE
A STORY OF A FAITHFUL ANIMAL Dear Boys and Girls, Here is a story* of an elephant, and how faithful he was to his master, a native of India. One time, when two neighbouring tribes were at war, at the head of one army walked an elephant carrying the standard. When the armies came to the battlefield, the Indian soldier told the elephant to halt, and the animal did as he was told. When the soldiers marched forward or retreated the elephant stood still, waiting for his master’s command. Alas! the Indian native was killed, and would no more be able to look after the elephant. When the battle was over, other soldiers tried by many means to get the animal to move, but it was no use. At length the leader of the army remembered that the elephant’s dead master had a little so'h of whom the animal was very fond. So the little boy was fetched, and as soon as it saw the boy it recognised him and followed him home. For three days and nights it had stood faithful to its master, waiting to hear his voice command him to move. With love until next week from your friend ALICE.
