THE VICE-PRESIDENCY
NO PROVISION FOR FILLING THE OFFICE While the Vice-President, Mr Truman, automatically assumes the Presidential duties, there is no provision made for the election or appointment of another vice-president, and this office will remain vacant during the currency of the present administration. The duty of president of the Senate, normally the major portion of the vice-presidential duties, will now be assumed by SenaI tor Kenneth McKellar, who. officiated in that capacity during any absence of the vice-president. | Seven Presidents of the United : States have died in-office since the formation of the Union. Apart from I President Roosevelt they were:—FreI sident Harrison, April 4, 1841; President Taylor, July 9, 1850; President Lincoln, March 3, 1865 (assassinated); President Garfield, September 19. 1881 (assassinated); President McKinley. September 14, 1901 (assassinated); President Harding, August 2, 1923.
