UNIVERSAL BUILDING CODE
EVIDENCE BY ARCHITECTS’ INSTITUTE Wellington, Apl. 12. Giving evidence before the Local Government Committee of Inquiry the New Zealand Institute of Architects discussed the question of a universal building code with a view to abolishing the impression likely to be drawn from the Standard Institute’s statement that a standard building code would have averted losses caused by the 1942 earthquakes. It was desired to make it clear that while the Architects’ Institute supports the Standard Institute in its claim for universal application of a building code, this procedure does not eliminate the enormous risk existing in the form of <»!der buildings and that it does not solve the problem of earthquake damage to these structures, or possible loss of life resulting from a major disaster.
