The American Ambassador in London (Mr John Winant) on learning of the sad occurrence, said: “The greatest American of our aee is dead.” The news came as a great shock to the people of Britain, who had no notice of the illness of the President, though photographs taken at the time of the Yalta Conference gave some indication of failing health.
