ADDRESS BY MR GOSSET At the monthly meeting of the Nar tional Beekeepers’ Association (Nel-' son branch) Mr Gosset who is on a visit to the city gave a short address on general hive management, many points of importance being dealt with. The Government inspector. Mr Mears, who was also present, spoke on the subject of transferring bees to proper regulation hives. During the latter part of the evening apiary byproducts and various uses to which honey can be put were discussed. High grade vinegar for instance can be made from the washings of cappings. This must first be brought to the correct specific gravity by the use of a hydrometer. Honey may be used as and makes an efficient machine belt dressing. A small quantity in preserves is a successful substitute for cane sugar.* Honey mixed with icing sugar and the white of an egg makes a delicious icing or filling for cakes. For those who make their own beverages honey wine, known as “mead” and honey beer are examples. Surplus wax can be utilised for making polishes and is useful for waxing threads. Most important, it may be exchanged for the wax foundation used in the apiary, this at a small cost. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the speakers and for the supper of honey cakes made by Mrs C. Cannington.
