LOCAL BODY MERGERS
PROGRESS IN OTHER CENTRES Wellington, This Day. Discussing amalgamation of local bodies generally in his evidence yesterday before the Parliamentary Committee on c overrent, the legal adviser to the New Zealand Muuicipnl Association, Mr. J. O’Shea, said the matter was one on which there was a great diversity of opinion among the members of association. but in the larger centres, except Auckland, the question was solving itself. Wellington had proceeded a long way. and there was great possibility of its development along the West Coast. There was a movement also for Day’s Bay to join the city. In Christchurch amalgamation was a live question, and Christchurch would expand still more. In Dunedin and Invercargill there was no present special activity, but great strides had already been made. There was movement in Nelson. In Auckland little progress wa3 being made. There were two aspects, amalgamation of areas and of functions. The success of amalgamation under existing power bad been exemplified, particularly in Wellington and Dunedin. "
