TO BE BUILT IN AUSTRALIA Melbourne, April 11. The newest type of four-motored Lancaster bombers capable of carrying a bombload of more than 25,0001bs will be in production at a Victoria factory before the end of the year. These : giant Lancasters, an improved class of the present warplane, not yet in mass production in England, will be convertible readily to civil airliners carrying more than 30 passengers. They will cruise at more than 250 miles an hour and their great fuel range will enable them to cross the Pacific to the United States in two hops. Their estimated cost is about £60.000 for each plane. Parts for the Lancasters will be manufactured in New South Wales and South Australia as well as Victoria, ’where the final assembly will be made. For the first Australian-made planes Rolls-Royce Merlin engines will be imported, but eventually the Merlin motor will be manufactured here. Australianmade longrange Mustang fighters are also scheduled for early production.
