INCREASED COSTS

EFFECT ON NELSON COLLEGES HOARDING DEPARTMENTS RUN AT A LOSS CHAIRMAN WARNS COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS The boarding departments at the Nelson Colleges were last year run at a loss of over £4OO and at last evenings meeting of the Council of Governors the chairman, Mr C. R. Fell, warned members that the council would have to keep a careful check on expenditure in the present year. Boarding fees had been increased and were expected to bring in an additional £ISOO. but this would be almost entirely offset by last year's deficit and the increased wages which were to be paid to the domestic staffs. Mr Fell quoted figures to show how costs had increased in recent years. The amount paid out for provisions at the Boys’ College last year was £8196, against £6564 in 1939. In the same period the wages bill at the college increased from £3444 to £4203. The position at the Girls’ College was very much the same, the figures being as follows, those for 1939 being shown in parentheses: Provisions, £2396 (£1796); wages. £l9lO (£1317). Those present at the meeting were Mr C. R. Fell (chairman). Lady B. M. Scott, Mrs E. R. M. Childs, Dr. W. D. S. Johnston, Messrs C. Milner. H. Barltrop, S. W. Kenning, D. F. Horlor, L. H. Bull, F. W. Hamilton and D. S. Max. The Public Works Department submitted a plan of the proposed sports ground at the rear of the Boys’' College, together with estimates of the cost of the work. The plans covered baths, tennis courts and fives courts, the total cost being estimated at between £17,000 and £19,000, according to the type of swimming bath constructed. The chairman pointed out that the work would have to be spread over a number of years. The plan was approved and it was resolved that the Public Works Department be asked to complete the necessary excavation and a portion of the drainage at a cost of £IO2O. Miss E. C. McNabb tendered her resignation as a mistress at the Girls’ College. Miss W. L. Shanks was granted leave of absence to the end of the second

PREPARATORY SCHOOL FEES

As the result of the council’s decision to increase the salaries of primary teachers at the Colleges, it was considered that a rise in the fees of the preparatory departments was unavoidable and they arc to be increased by £1 a term.
