SEALS BLAMED FOR FISH SHORTAGE

Melbourne, Mar. 10. More than 100,000 seals along the Victorian coast are responsible for the rapid depletion of edible fish, according to fishermen. The complaint was made at a fisheries conference at the Directorate of War Organisation of Industry to-day. Seals herded fish like dogs herded cattle, then began to destroy them, it was stated. One fisherman said seals would drive fiathead netting out of existence unless measures were taken to control them. The Victorian Chief Inspector of Fisheries and Game. M- F. Lewis, who was chairman of the conference, said a Victorian firm was at present making experiments into the use of seals for commercial purposes. If this proved successful he had no doubt that large numbers would be taken from the sea.
